Rolfing Structural Integration Therapy
The Words of Ida P. Rolf, PhD (1897-1979)

A human body is a line in gravity, and how the body is organized around that line affects everything. When the body’s segments are out of alignment, the human being is working against the continuous force of gravity, requiring more strength, spirit, and stamina to hold the body together and up.

Rolfing is based on the recognition of Dr. Ida P. Rolf, biochemist and structural integration pioneer, that the appropriate relationship of the body’s segments to each other and to gravity is the key to structural health.

Some individuals may perceive their losing fight with gravity as a sharp pain in their back, others as the unflattering contour of their body, others as a constant fatigue, yet others an unrelentingly threatening environment. Some may call it old age. And yet all these signals may be pointing to a single problem, so prominent in their own structure, as well as others, that it has been ignored; they are off balance.

Imbalances in posture and alignment lead to misuse and overwork of muscle and nerve tissues. Fascia, which extends like a web, surrounding the tissues throughout the body, responds by getting thicker – to support the structure and keep the body upright. Fascia will also thicken to protect an injury, and to support the muscles called upon to compensate.

Fascia is the organ of posture, the organ of structure.

Dr. Rolf discovered that the body can change; that it can be changed by manipulating fascia. Fascia can be relaxed and directed with firm external pressure, and as lines of tension in the body shift, and holding and movement patterns change, the body parts readjust. They discover their proper place and relationship; they find the line.

Rolfing has to do with gravity. Not chemistry, not medicine, not the idea of individually fixing this and that wrong. Gravity is the one and only tool that we use…we are directing the flow of gravity by virtue of organizing the body... so gravity can flow through it.

Dr. Rolf started working on family and friends in the l940’s, and began taking students in the l960’s. She trained them to see the body as relationships. She created a series of ten sessions, teaching techniques to release holding and tension patterns in the body, increase structural support and allow more freedom of movement. She developed and taught language and coaching to promote body awareness and encourage new structural habits. Each session has a specific focus relating to breath, or support, or movement and each reaches back to the previous ones while preparing for the next.

Integration is always the goal.

The body as a whole must be balanced.
